Description:
New York City’s natural history is reflected in some of its oldest living organisms: its trees. We refer to those trees that have endured the pressures of human development— and have the scars to show for it—as veteran trees. Some of the veteran trees at Green-Wood date back to the Cemetery’s founding in 1838 or earlier and are remnants of the legacy of Brooklyn’s old-growth forests. These specimens require a unique approach to tree care, one that seeks to consider a tree’s natural aging processes. Join world-class arborist and veteran tree care specialist Philip Kelley and Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture Joseph Charap for a conversation on how and why we seek to preserve our veteran trees.
