Municipal Pruning: Selling the Concept in Your Community

    Summary

In spite of the generally recognized necessity of pruning urban trees, there is evidence that in many cases the existing tree-management practice in this respect fails. A considerable amount of street trees declines before they are able to accomplish their function or suffers from serious damage because pruning was not performed in their younger years. Over the last years a concept for pruning young street trees has been worked out in the Netherlands. In parts this concept shows significant differences in comparison to what is taught and practiced in other (European) countries. As the first 25 years in the life of a street tree are decisive for a good tree structure, this presentation introduces a concept for a planned pruning within a fixed time scale. By making tree workers and tree owners aware of the necessity of structural pruning, we can convince them that structural pruning of young trees is one of the most sustainable contributions to the lifespan of an urban tree.
