“Until You’ve Pruned a Mile with My Saws”
Summary
Tempers can flare and words fly when trees are the center of conflict. Between utilities and communities, trees have different values and can create a variety of unfavorable situations. Different tactics have been used in the past for one side or the other to get their way, many ending in hard feelings and resentment. Having been a City Arborist, Community Forester for the Nebraska Forest Service, and currently a Utility Arborist, I would like to share some ways that tree conflict between utilities and communities can be settled in a positive way for both sides.

After receiving his BS in Forestry from Iowa State University in 1995, Chip Murrow went to work for Commonwealth Edison in Lombard, Illinois as a Utility Arborist contracted through ECI. A year later he was back at Iowa State University to do research and gain his MS in Forestry by 1998. Chip spent two years as City Arborist of Mason City, Iowa (1999 - 2001) before moving the family to Lincoln, Nebraska where he was Community Forester Assistant for the Nebraska Forest Service. After nine years with the forest service, Chip got the opportunity to move back home to Iowa and take up the position he is currently in as one of four foresters for the Midwest region of ITC vegetation management division. Chip is a past president of the Midwestern ISA chapter, is a certified arborist along with utility and municipal specialist. Chip is also a graduate of the first SMA Municipal Forestry Institute class held in 2006. But his greatest honors are his wife Michelle and two children Rob and Brooke.
