Novel Applications of Urban Tree Canopy Assessment and Prioritization Tools: Supporting Collaborative Decision Making to Achieve Urban Sustainability Goals

    Summary

Diverse stakeholders can use Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment and Prioritization tools to collaboratively achieve urban sustainability goals. UTC Assessments were initially motivated by improved scientific understanding of declining urban water quality and the beneficial roles trees play. Our process has led to accurate estimates of tree canopy, which has in turn informed tree canopy goal setting.  UTC Prioritizations serve as both a planning process for collaborative decision-making and a set of geographic analysis tools. The desired end outcome is to provide decision support to stakeholders to aid in reaching a canopy target using outcome-based approaches.
