Emergency Tree Risk Management in New York City
Summary
Hurricane Sandy destroyed thousands of mature trees across New York City. NYC Parks utilizes a comprehensive emergency tree incident response protocol to tackle such severe weather events. The protocol has been developed using historical experience and federal guidelines for incident management together with our new “Storm Mobile” computer application. This carefully planned approach facilitates rapid risk assessment of damaged trees, field generation of prioritized work orders, and optimal dispatching of forestry crews. It also allows NYC Parks to efficiently utilize additional resources and continually provide accurate progress reports on our risk mitigation operations.
