    Using Appraised Values of Trees to Make Urban Forestry Management Decisions: Is a Tree Worth the Cost of Maintenance?

    Summary

    Decisions for budgeting and spending money on maintaining trees can have an economic basis. When evaluating trees on a property, whether across a city's urban forest, trees in mall parking lots, or trees in a private yard, calculating the value of the trees can help in decisions.
     
    To prioritize maintenance, it helps to know that the trees at the main entrance of a park have a higher value than the trees in the natural area in the back corner. Knowing a tree has a current value of $1,200, when the necessary pruning and pest control work for structure and health will cost $900, can direct decisions for when the tree is worth the work to maintain it.
     
    In this session we will review the results of tree inventories and tree value calculations for a city park, a commercial property, and a homeowners association. Knowing the tree values helped the decision makers to best prioritize their budgets, while providing increases in tree values with the results of the maintenance work completed.
     
    Take home lessons include: The data to collect when doing a tree inventory or tree evaluations to make economic decisions about trees, decision making for tree maintenance using tree values and maintenance costs, and showing how tree maintenance improves current tree values and tree health.

    Presenters

    John A. Harris is a Landscape Economist with experience across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. He works with arborists, landscape contractors, property managers, attorneys, and property owners in assessing, valuing, and managing tree populations for a better shared environment.

    John is the Principal of Landscape Economics, LLC and President of Earth Advisors, Inc. He has an MBA from Syracuse University, an MS in Forest Economics and BS in Resources Management from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and an AAS from SUNY Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College. His qualifications include: Landscape Economist, trained Tree and Landscape Appraiser, Certified Forester, Registered Consulting Arborist, Certified Arborist, Certified Landscape Inspector, Certified Nursery Tree Grader, Certified Mangrove Trimmer, Certified in Florida Green Industry Best Management Practices, Certified Xeriscape Contractor.

    John has been a landscape contractor, landscape designer, landscape maintenance contractor, arborist, forester, educator, and consultant throughout his 30 year career in the Green Industry. He is currently concentrating his work as a Consulting Expert. He is working with other consultants, arborists, and businesses to improve their work practices, reports, incomes, and businesses.
