Climbing and Pruning Large Coniferous Trees: Lessons Learned in the Pacific Northwest
Summary
Expanding upon the Conifer Care Guidelines discussed at the 2012 ISA Conference in Portland, Oregon, the goals of this presentation are to update and refine the protocol we have developed for managing large evergreen trees in the Pacific Northwest. Canopy-scale pruning, ecological considerations, time-lapse filming of tree work, safety considerations, the Double-System Technique (DST), ground-rescue systems, and storm damage prevention will be covered in this talk. As many trees in the Pacific Northwest reach their 100th birthday, we hope to help them age gracefully and become urban old-growth.

Presenters
Nicholas
Whittaker Dankers has been an arborist for 12 years and has worked throughout
the Pacific Northwest with a focus on tree preservation. While attending Dartmouth
College, Nicholas started Picea Woodland Designs as a tree care company
committed to safety, appropriate technology, tree health, and ecological
restoration. This experience has been enhanced by working with numerous,
like-minded tree services around the Puget Sound in order to develop the
highest standards for arboricultural practices. The multitude of large,
evergreen trees in the region inspired him to develop the Conifer Care
Guidelines and share them with both arborists and the general public. He will
be attending the University of Washington's Graduate School of Forestry in
2013.
