    Pruning Mature Trees

    Summary

Why do we think that trees “need” pruning? What can we learn from the ways that trees manage themselves? In this presentation, Scott Baker will discuss the history of pruning mature trees, considering recent research and new thinking as well as traditional pruning methods. He will focus on management pruning of old, large trees in urban settings, and will address some of the issues that can arise when a tree has people—other than arborists—who are invested in it for different reasons. Several case studies will be presented, and Scott hopes to stimulate discussion and leave participants still thinking about this subject when they get home!
