Trees are Everyone's Business: Improving Street Tree Performance in York Region
Summary
The Regional Municipality of York is located in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. The Region’s Urban Forestry program includes the management of 80,000 street trees. Each year the Region plants more than 2,000 street trees. In 2003, only28% of recently planted trees were in good health. Poor stock quality, inadequate planting and maintenance practices, and poor soil were identified as contributing factors. In response, a series of continuous improvements were made to stock quality, planting practices, watering and design guidelines. Street tree performance improved dramatically; today, 75% of recently planted trees are in good health.

James Lane
is the Program Manager, Forestry at the Regional Municipality of York. James is responsible for the urban forest/street tree program, management of the York Regional Forest and administration of the Region’s Forest Conservation By-law. He has worked on several projects including the development of the Region’s street tree preservation and planting design guidelines, review of street tree planting practices, and the Region’s response to the Emerald Ash Borer.
James holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of New Brunswick. He is a Registered Professional Forester and an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.He has worked for the Regional Municipality of York for 12 years.
