Superstorm Sandy: Realizations, Recovery and Replanting
Summary
This presentation will
begin by exploring the overall impact that Superstorm Sandy had on tree
resources in the greater New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area,
highlighting tree losses that occurred in a historical CCC plantation, the NYC
Botanical Gardens, New York City’s Central Park, the Bartlett Arboretum and
NJ’s coastal communities. It will then
move into some unique ways that people prepared for the storm or are dealing
with the aftermath of it, including stories about the preparation of the Rockefeller
Center Holiday Tree, the use of discarded Christmas trees for dune
stabilization, the re-establishment of maritime forests as natural buffers and
new thoughts on where and what type of tree to replant. The presentation will end with an overview of
what some communities and states are doing to minimize future damage, including
infrastructure hardening, legislation and trees on private property.
