    Decay School


    A workshop on the history, biology,  and implications of wood and tree decay for arborists and the owners or managers of properties with trees.

    Introduction to the decay fungus lifestyle; major groups of decay fungi; initiation and mechanisms of decay; heartrot, saprot, root rot, and softrot fungi. 

    Review of wood and tree structure, factors influencing rate of development of decay in trees; the compartmentalization of decay in trees (codit);  failure of compartmentalization to contain aggressive tree decay pathogens; decay prevention and management of decayed trees.



    Glen Stanosz is a Professor of Tree and Forest Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He is a native of Milwaukee, an ISA certified arborist, is TRAQ qualified, and is a practicing plant health consultant.  Glen is an ISA Gold Leaf recipient and has been recognized with the Excellence in Teaching award of the American Phytopathological Society.  His research group studies tree diseases caused by fungi, and he teaches disease biology and management to students in horticulture, landscape architecture, and professionals in forestry and the green industry.
