Description:
Dr. Whitney Cranshaw (Colorado State University) will discuss the ever-changing cast of new and invasive tree insects that have become issues in the Rocky Mountain states over the past 30 years. Through human-assisted spread there has long been a constant flow of new insects colonizing the woody landscape plants of the Rocky Mountain/Intermountain West, involving both species that are native to other areas of North America and those that are of more exotic origin. How well these new colonizers establish is often very different than occurs in other regions due to differences in climate, geography, landscaping practices, and the mix of plants present. In this discussion we will provide a review of how various introduced species on shade trees and shrubs have developed – or in some cases failed to develop – as pests of woody plants over the past three decades in Colorado.
