Biomechanics and Risk Assessment: What You Need to Know

Date: April 5, 2019
Location: Rotary Field House at South Surrey Recreation Center Complex, Surrey, British Columbia, CANADA
Organizer: Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA
Sponsor: Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA
Description: This course will focus on how tree mechanics affects the likelihood of failure component in risk assessment. We will look at wood anatomy, wind loading, wood decay, biomechanics and methods of investigating internal wood conditions with sonic tomography and resistance drilling. The course will be of use to anyone conducting risk assessments.
Schedule

Location: Rotary Field House at South Surrey Recreation Center Complex, 2197 148 St, Surrey, BC, V4A 9P5, Canada

Instructors

Frank Rinn owns RINNTECH, a company that develops equipment for dendrochronology, tree and timber inspection. Frank invented and developed different methods, machines, and computer programs for various purposes in tree-ring analysis, dendrochronology, tree- and timber inspection, such as resistance drilling, sonic tree tomography & root-plate detection, wood surface density analysis. He was granted several national and international patents, for example on high resolution and high-precision resistance drilling and sonic tomography including the RESISTOGRAPH® and ARBOTOM®

For his inventions and developments, he received several research and innovation awards (1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2004, and 2012).

Besides managing RINNTECH Frank works as a court registered expert, inspecting trees and timber structures. He lectures all over the world and has published several dozen papers on various topics.

Since 2001, he served as voluntary Executive Director of ISA Germany. He was on the ISA Tree-Risk Panel of Experts and contributed to the corresponding BMP. From 2011 to 2013 he served on the ISA Board of Directors.

Julian Dunster is a Registered Consulting Arborist and an Honourary Life member of the International Society of Arboriculture and the PNW Chapter. He is the lead author of the TRAQ course manual and served on the ISA Tree-Risk Panel of Experts and contributed to the corresponding BMP. Julian designed and implemented the TRACE programme that lead to the development of the TRAQ credential. He teaches the TRAQ course and advanced risk assessment techniques in several parts of the world.
