Description
One of an arborists main tools to improve wildlife habitat is managing dead and dying trees as safe and effective wildlife snags. Whether your community is considering conserving its first wildlife habitat snag or its 1000th snag, there are many factors to consider including whether and how to communicate this tree’s special designation to the public. Signs are an opportunity to express values and intentions and can signal well run programs. What are goals that arborists should have in mind when conserving wildlife trees and how can arborists best use wildlife tree signs to achieve these goals? What are potential drawbacks to watch out for?

Brian French is a skilled climber with a broad range of arboriculture related experience with certifications such as CA, CTW, and Tree Risk Assessor. Practicing for over 23 years in Oregon and abroad. Dedicated to and contributor of cutting edge research for a better understanding of trees and safer work practices for arborists worldwide.
Ryan Gilpin is a Consulting Advisor for the Bartlett Tree Expert Company providing guidance on consulting projects throughout the United States and Canada. While maintaining a breadth of consulting services, Ryan specializes in tree preservation projects. Ryan is also interested in creating more habitat for birds in urban forests and minimizing impacts to birds during tree care operations. Ryan co-authored the Tree Care for Wildlife Best Management Practices in California and is working on an update that includes Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. Ryan routinely presents and leads field trips at tree care industry and other events. Ryan recently moved to Portland, Oregon and has been enjoying social distanced outdoor activities there.
Corey Bassett is PhD Student researching urban forest management at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Forestry, in Vancouver, BC. She recently joined the PNW-ISA Board of Directors as Public Outreach Director. Prior to moving to Vancouver, BC, she lived in Honolulu, HI, San Diego, CA, and Philadelphia, PA, where she worked with urban trees (both with signs and without!) through arboricultural consulting, community forestry outreach, and municipal tree care. Corey serves on the Tree Care for Birds and other Wildlife committee of Western Chapter ISA as a co-author of Tree Care for Wildlife Best Management Practices in California, and is working to expand these BMPs to more audiences and contexts. Corey is an ISA Certified Arborist and holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
