Description:
This comprehensive 3-day Crane Climber Qualification Course is designed for arborists aiming to safely & efficiently perform crane-assisted tree removals. The course combines essential classroom instruction with hands-on training at real job sites to ensure each participant leaves with both qualification & practical, in-field experience.
Day 1: Theory Training
The first day is theory-based education that lays a critical foundation for the hands-on fieldwork in Days 2 & 3. Topics covered include:
- Proper PPE selection & use
- Effective communication between climber, ground crew, & crane operator
- Crane pre-flight inspection procedures
- Calculating wood weight & load distribution
- Crane ball & sling placement
- Safe & efficient work positioning
- Making proper cuts under crane load
- Coordinating workflow with the entire crew
This theoretical session ensures participants understand not just what to do, but why it matters—building awareness for safe, streamlined crane operations.
In the afternoon, students will complete their Qualified Rigger & Signalperson. This includes hands-on instruction in industry-standard hand signals, load rigging techniques, & proper communication protocols. Upon successful completion, participants will receive their qualification card, preparing them for the hands-on portions of the course.
Days 2 & 3: Hands-On Crane Climbing & Rigging
The final two days are entirely field-based, giving participants extensive hands-on practice at multiple live job sites. With a climbing instructor in the tree alongside them, students will perform crane-assisted climbing, rigging, & picking operations in a variety of scenarios & setups.
Emphasis will be placed on real-time decision making, adapting to different site conditions, & maintaining the highest safety standards. Each student will work through full crane-assisted removal processes, from setup to final cut, while practicing communication & coordination with the operator & ground crew.
