Presenting a Spreadsheet-based Open-source Tree Canopy Closure Model

Date: June 22, 2020
Location: Morris Arboretum, Philadelphia, PA, UNITED STATES
Organizer: Jason Lubar
Sponsor: Morris Arboretum
Description: Instructor: Jason Lubar
Associate Director of Urban Forestry, Morris Arboretum

When planting trees along a street, in a park, or for an environmental restoration project, understanding the number of years until the canopy will close is crucial. A dense or closed canopy offers many benefits, such as reducing invasive/exotic plants that can threaten ecological restoration, lowering ambient temperatures, improving wildlife habitat, increasing oxygen levels and sequestering carbon.

Manipulating canopy closure time to achieve project goals can significantly reduce project costs, while allowing stakeholders to determine the most advantageous planting density and mix of tree sizes. Several factors can impact canopy closure and management goals over time, such as tree growth and mortality rates.

To explore these issues, Jason Lubar has created an Excel-based tree canopy closure model. This open-source model can be used to calculate tree canopy cover goals, tree planting project budgets, and planting densities, while manipulating tree growth and mortality rates to improve project decision-making. Jason will present and discuss the tree canopy closure model during this free webinar.

This webinar is intended for anyone who plants trees, including planting program managers, environmental restoration practitioners, street tree stewards, shade tree commissions, environmental action committees, and other interested individuals. This webinar carries one CEU for Arborists, Municipal, or BCMA Management.
