Description:
Join Cecil Konijnendijk during a live broadcast on The Power of Simplicity: Communicating Guidelines in Urban Forestry. In February 2021, Cecil started promoting the 3-30-300 rule for urban forestry and creating greener and healthier cities. Based on current evidence on the benefits of trees, green spaces, and canopy cover, the rule calls for being able to see at least 3 trees from every home, live in neighborhoods with at least 30% tree canopy cover, and have no more than 300 meters to the nearest public green space.
Obviously this type of rule needs nuancing and adaptation to local situations, but it also represents a powerful way of communicating urban forest benefits to politicians, experts from other sectors, and citizens.
This webinar discusses some of the experiences obtained during the promotion of this new rule. Past experiences with similar simple messages and guidelines, such as the impactful 10-20-30 rule for urban tree diversity by Frank Santamour are also brought in.
A key question that guides this presentation is: How can we balance the need for simple and clear guidelines and messaging with the complexity of urban forestry systems and the still emerging evidence on tree benefits across the globe?
