Introduction to Tree Climbing

Description: Introduction to Tree Climbing is a 2-day hands-on workshop designed for tree care professionals who want to learn or refresh the basic fundamentals, practice and safety protocols of tree access and climbing for arboricultural work. This course will teach those new to climbing the basic skills to be safe, efficient and productive out in the field. If students have personal climbing equipment they are encouraged to bring their gear to learn how to properly inspect the life support components. Emphasis on ANSI Z133 safety standards compliance will be an ongoing theme throughout the 2 day workshop to drive home the importance of safety.



Introduction to climbing will cover the following 4 fundamental areas:

Identifying, establishing and securing anchorages
Throwline application, techniques, and rope installation
Tree climbing work practices including both MRS (Moving Rope Systems) and SRS (Stationary Rope Systems)
Emergency response and aerial rescue

DAY 1 - Wednesday, August 21: 8:00am - 3:00pm

8:00am - 10:00am: Gear inspection, ANSI Z133 Standards and industry statistics on tree care injuries and fatalities
10:00am - 10:30am: Break
10:30am-12:30pm: Identifying, Establishing and Securing Anchorages
12:30-1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm-3:00pm: Throwline Application, Techniques and Rope Installation

DAY 2 - Thursday, August 22: 8:00am - 3:00pm

8:00am-9:30am: Revisit gear inspection and review ANSI Z133 Standards. Review key concepts on anchorages, throwline and rope installation.
9:30am-12:30pm: Tree Climbing Work Practices, MRS and SRS climbing techniques
12:30pm - 1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm - 3:00pm: Tree Climbing Work Practices and Emergency Response

Instructors

Philip Kelley is a lead climber and instructor. He has 26 years in the industry and is a Past President of the Georgia Arborist Association and has been a Certified Arborist since 2000. He is a judge for the ISA North American Tree Climbing Championship and ISA Aerial Rescue International Tree Climbing Championship. He has taught for North American Training Solutions since 2009. He is a contract climber and owner of Samara Tree Preservation and Training since 2014.

Philip is an ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Instructor for Tree Worker/Climber specialist, Aerial Rescue Technician, Line clearance tree trimmer, Electrical Hazard Awareness, Aerial Lift Specialist, Hazard Tree Assessment, Tree Dynamics and Integrated Risk Assessor, Advanced Chainsaw Safety Cutting & Felling Techniques. He was a part of the NATS Instructor Intensive Training in 2009, 2015, Chainsaw Train the Trainer in 2014, and Vitality Summit in 2016.

Jamilee Kempton recently moved back to the PNW after living in Hawaii for over 8 years. She is a Washington state native, ISA certified Arborist (WE-9767A) and has been working in tree care since 2012. During her time in Hawaii, she was the head arborist at Lyon Arboretum and later on worked as a production climber for Oahu Tree Works LLC. She studied Urban Tree Care at Windward Community College and completed a BBA at Shidler College of Business. In 2015 she was the women’s world champion at the ITCC in Tampa, Florida. She co-instructs at various PNW-ISA workshops including Emergency Response and Aerial Rescue, Advanced Climbing, and Women’s Tree Climbing. Jamilee currently works as a climbing arborist for Out on a Limb Tree Co in Seattle.
