Description:
Arborists are often asked to prune fruit trees that have been long neglected or haphazardly pruned without a clear philosophy. This class will equip participants with knowledge specific to fruit trees: common trained forms and pruning approaches, species-specific habits and challenges, and tactics to improve production of quality fruit. We will discuss how to interpret and approach client expectations and needs while prioritizing biology-based care, and opportunities for educating and partnering with clients. The day will consist of an indoor lecture, outdoor tour/demonstration on a site with diverse trees, and light hands-on practice in groups.

What to Bring:
Hand pruning tools - pruners and hand saws
Clothing for comfort in all weather situations - we will be outside for half the class time
Gloves and eye protection
Optional: orchard ladders and/or pole pruners/pole saws if you have these available
Instructor
Laila Suidan has been in business as an arborist and horticulturalist, with a specialty in fruit tree care, for twelve years. She teaches Arboriculture and Pruning courses at South Seattle College and has developed and taught courses in fruit tree care for Seattle Tilth and City Fruit. Outside of trees, she enjoys playing music and taking walks with her cat. She finds life meaning through study of nature.
