How to Inspect and Prune Trees for Wildlife Workshop

Date: June 27, 2022
Location: Sprinker Recreation Center, AlderRoom, Tacoma, Washington, UNITED STATES
Organizer: PNW-ISA Chapter
Description: In recent years, the tree care industry has embraced many practices regarding wildlife. The ISA Pruning Best Management Practices (BMPs) recommend inspecting for signs of nesting wildlife and discuss managing wildlife habitat as a new pruning objective.
This 8-hour workshop will involve approximately 60% indoor, classroom instruction and 40% outdoor, hands-on training. Outdoor portions will focus on habitat analysis, pre-work inspections, coronet cuts and artificial cavity creation. Please bring your PPE and hearing protection.

Workshop instructors have been working with the Western Chapter of the ISA to develop BMPs for the tree care industry regarding wildlife. The instructors bring contrasting perspectives to the workshop. Brian French is a climbing arborist in Portland with a background in traditional arboriculture. Ryan Gilpin is a consulting arborist in Portland with a background in ecology and conservation.
