i-Tree 2015: New Innovations for Assessing Community Tree Services and Values

Since 2006, the i-Tree software suite has provided free analytic tools to quantify community forest structure and the environmental services trees provide based on U. S. Forest Service science. This workshop will introduce and demonstrate the latest innovative features and tools available in the 2015 version of i-Tree. The workshop,­­ led by i-Tree Development Team members, will provide participants with an understanding of typical applications and advantages of key i-Tree field-based and aerial assessment tools including i-Tree Eco, Canopy and Landscape. Application of these tools internationally will also be discussed with a focus on applicability, limitations and options for applying the tools outside the U.S.

i-Tree Eco is a field-based assessment tool already effectively used in North & South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Eco offers new project options including tree growth and benefit forecasting, expanded management reporting, and a simplified data collection option in an updated interface. 

i-Tree Canopy is a simple web-based aerial assessment tool utilized in the United States and abroad to accurately estimate tree and other cover types. i-Tree Canopy also estimates air pollutant removal and atmospheric carbon reduction attributed to tree canopy.

Participants will also be introduced to the next generation of i-Tree analysis and decision-making capabilities offered in i-Tree Landscape. Landscape is a web-accessible spatial assessment tool utilizing tree cover maps and other spatial data to estimate ecosystem services and values. Future i-Tree Landscape versions will allow managers to map priority areas for tree planting and preservation to protect tree and human populations. 

Presenter Information

    • Al Zelaya
          Al Zelaya is an Urban Forester for The Davey Institute. His responsibilities include development, research, training, website administration and providing technical support for domestic and international i-Tree projects. Zelaya has over 15 years of experience working in urban forestry, arboriculture and natural areas management at the state, county and local levels. Al is an ISA certified arborist and has a BA from DePaul University in Chicago, IL. Al also serves as a member of the instructor cadre for the Society of Municipal Arborists’ (SMA) Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) program. 
    • Jason Henning

      Jason Henning is a Research Urban Forester with the Davey Institute housed in the USDA Forest Service, Philadelphia Field Station. Jason’s responsibilities include engaging in research efforts, supporting communities in the application of the i-Tree Suite of tools, and communicating urban forest science to diverse audiences. Jason’s background includes a Ph.D. in forestry, an M.S. in Statistics, and six years of teaching and research in quantitative forestry at the university level. His work in the interface between science and practice helps to target research efforts at community needs and ensure that science is delivered to the people and places where it can best be used.

    • Mike Binkley

      Mike Binkley currently manages Technology Development at the Davey Institute for various Research and Development programs at Davey. This includes internal and external projects in terms of software and web development, Geographic Information Systems, related hardware needs, and associated training. His primary responsibility is to introduce different perspectives through the application of new technology to Davey endeavors in order to increase ease of use and efficiency. Mike has been with Davey since 1997 in addition to operating his own consulting company since 1994. He has also taught GIS at Kent State University.
