As arborists it is our job to evaluate trees and give solutions to mitigate risks. Often wildlife habitat exists in tree risks in the form of cavities, dead snags or broken tops. One could say that sometimes our job as an arborist is to identify wildlife habitat, then prune or remove it.

We should recognize that wildlife need homes. The presence of wildlife in trees is often associated with risks. However, in many cases risks can be reduced and mitigated while retaining existing wildlife habitat or creating new wildlife habitat. Not all trees need to be used as habitat trees, but in the right place it can make a large difference to the community around.

In some instances, removing habitat may be breaking the law. Often climbing arborist’s are making first ascents into the crowns of trees and may come in contact with wildlife. Knowing regulatory laws and protected species is the arborist’s responsibility.

This seminar will show how instead of removing trees to the ground, portions can be safely retained and used as habitat. Demonstration will include techniques like ‘Cornett Pruning’ and how you can create bird boxes by either using pre-existing cavities or creating them with the use of a saw. You will learn how you can attract the type of animal you are creating habitat for by the size and location of the holes you create.

  Dwayne Neustaeter is president, curriculum programmer and lead instructor of Arboriculture Canada Training & Education Ltd., an organization focusing on meeting the training and business needs of arborists and related industries. Dwayne’s background and experience complement his current activities of program development, workbook writing and development and testing in the field. He instructs classes and seminars on safety and a wide range of skills for arborists around the world. Dwayne has over 20 years experience in the tree care and related industries, focusing on total tree care operations, instruction and testing at a post-secondary level and lastly with instruction, program development & certification with private training businesses.
  
  Dwayne has been involved in ownership and management of businesses for over 20 years. He is passionate about helping organizations in the green industry with management issues such as: team building, standard operating procedures, occupational hazard compliance, and strengthening business practices that will serve to improve the bottom line and minimize risks. Dwayne’s dynamic presentation style will inspire and motivate business operators to go back to their businesses with renewed energy and practical action steps. As the SCA President, International Tree Climbing Competition Operations Chair, past-president of the ISA Prairie Chapter and past member of multiple ISA Committee’s, he remains involved in associations and committees across North America to give back to the industry and continue learning.

  Brian French is founder of Portland, OR based tree care company, Arboriculture International LLC since 2013. He has been a climbing certified arborist since 2002 and is an ISA qualified tree risk assessor. Serving as coordinator for the Oregon Champion Tree Registry and Portland Heritage Tree Program Chair, his work focuses primarily on the preservation of significant, old trees and associated flora and fauna. His volunteering for the Audubon Society of Portland has paved the way for various ongoing wildlife habitat projects including salmon habitat restoration, snag development, red tree vole surveys and developing urban wildlife guidelines.
